Sea Smoke at Head Harbour Lighthouse
A frigid morning on Campobello Island
This was an incredibly cold morning on the last day of the year in 2017, with temps somewhere around -10F. The sea smoke (fog) was thick and everything was covered in rime ice. The wind was howling and throwing frozen chunks of sea water across the road. I went to this spot on Campobello Island to view Head Harbour Lighthouse (aka East Quoddy Lighthouse), hoping it would peak out of the fog, and I felt like a kid in a (freezing) candy store while I photographed this scene. I had tried the same spot the day before but the sea smoke was so thick you couldn’t even see the lighthouse!

Come join me as we photograph winter scenes on the coast of Maine and Campobello!
Winter Photography Workshops
These are my first ever winter workshops! They are held in Lubec, Maine, 2 hours east of Acadia National Park.
Jan 12-15, 2026 (3 nights)
Feb 11-14, 2026 (3 nights)
We will focus on lighthouses, landscapes, and fishing boats. Hopefully we will have snow and sea smoke! Sea smoke is a fog that forms on the ocean on very cold mornings. These workshops are scheduled in Jan & Feb which have the best chance for sub-zero F mornings with good sea smoke engulfing lighthouses, cliffs, and fishing boats. Stars will not be the main focus. This is for hearty folks who can stand being out in the cold! Dress warm! See the workshop page for more information and photos.
All workshops will visit Campobello Island by car, part of Canada, so bring your passport (or driver’s license & birth certificate)!
