Moonlight and Milky Way
The moon lights up the landscape as the Milky Way fades away.
The Milky Way fades away over the coast of Maine on a recent night as the rising moon washes out the sky and lights up the land.
It was a lot of fun watching the cliff face light up slowly as the moon rose off to the east. The light on the landscape started just barely visible to the naked eye and gradually the cliffs glowed more and more as the sky became brighter.
It’s not often I shoot with moonlight, but I do enjoy the blue sky that you get from either twilight or moonlight. When the moon is low on the horizon the sky still has enough detail to show the Milky Way.
Nikon Z6 with NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens @ 14mm, f/2.8. Sky: 20 exposures at 10 seconds and IS0 6400 stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker for low noise. Foreground: 5 minutes at ISO 1600. The sky and foreground were then blended in Photoshop to get low noise and details in both the landscape and sky.
Maine Milky Way Workshops!
There are still spots available in my late season Milky Way photography workshops in Lubec, Maine, 2 hours east of Acadia National Park!
Sep 18-20 (3 nights, leave on 21st)
Oct 11-13 (3 nights, leave on 14th)
This is a landscape photography workshop, with a focus on landscape astrophotography with the Milky Way as conditions permit. This area is also a great place for dramatic sunrises and sunsets, with lobster boats, lighthouses, harbors, and rugged coastline as our foreground. There are also opportunities to photograph wildlife including bald eagles, seals, porpoise, and whales.
We will also drive over the bridge to Campobello Island, part of Canada, for a sunset trip -- so bring your passport!
