Milky Way Reflection In A Cove
Mirror like reflections
The Milky Way, Jupiter, and Saturn reflect in a cove on a calm night on the coast of Maine. The lack of wind made for some amazing mirror-like reflections. It’s hard to tell in the photo, but I’m actually standing on a cliff about 20 feet above the water.
Nikon Z 6 with FTZ lens adapter and NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens @ 14mm and f/2.8 for all shots.
Sky: Star stacked result of 20 exposures each at 10 seconds and ISO 3200.
Foreground: Focus stack of two exposures each at 5 minutes and ISO 3200.
Star stacking is a method of taking multiple short exposures to get pinpoint stars and then stacking them in software to average out the noise, resulting in a low noise image.
Check out my book or my free Milky Way Crash Course webinar to learn all about star stacking and separate foreground exposures. Or join me in person on my 2026 Maine Milky Way workshops.

Stunning capture of the Milky Way and its reflection. The technical detail about standing 20 feet above the water while maintaning that mirror effect is quite impressive. I once tried star stacking in a similar coastal environment and the wind was such a nightmare for the foreground focus. It seems like the combination of zero wind and focus stacking realy pays off for that glass-like surface.
