Milky Way & Jupiter Over the Coast of Maine
Photograph the stars on the darkest part of the Maine coast.
Jupiter and the Milky Way glow over the coast of Maine from a beautiful clear summer night a few years ago. The light on the cliffs is from West Quoddy Head Lighthouse about 1/4 mile away.
Nikon Z 7 with NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens @ f/2.8, 14mm. Sky: 20 exposures at ISO 4000, 10 seconds, stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker for low noise. Foreground: Single exposure at ISO 1600 for 10 minutes.
I planned this shot with PhotoPills (one of the many things I teach on my workshops). I used the built-in intervalometer feature on my Nikon Z 7 to make it easy to capture the 20 exposures for star stacking. I used an external bulb timer for the 10 minute foreground exposure, but many newer cameras (including all the newer Nikon Z cameras, and many Canon cameras) have the built-in ability to set shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds without using a bulb timer. Check your manual if you’re not sure! Also, many cameras now have a built-in intervalometer as well.
Come photograph this scene on my 2026 Maine Milky Way workshops! These are all held in Lubec, Maine, 2 hours east of Acadia National Park.
Jul 14-17 (3 nights)
Aug 11-14 (3 nights)
Sep 8-11 (3 nights)
Come explore the Bold Coast of Maine! These workshops focus on Milky Way photography but we will also capture dramatic sunsets, with lobster boats, lighthouses, harbors, and rugged coastline as our foreground. There are also opportunities to photograph wildlife including bald eagles, seals, porpoise, and whales.
We will also drive over the bridge to Campobello Island, part of Canada, for a sunset trip -- so bring your passport (or driver’s license and birth certificate)!
You’ll get 10% off lodging at Cohill’s Inn as part of the workshop.
Heads up, my Milky Way workshops often sell out quickly.
