Galactic Glow Over Ocean Cliffs
The Milky Way on the coast of Maine.
The Milky Way shines over cliffs on the coast of Maine on a recent crystal clear night.
This was a beautiful crisp early September night with low humidity, making for great stargazing and watching meteors.
I shot this at 24mm and cropped in even more in post-processing. Shooting at 24mm or longer is a fun way to really get detail in the Galactic Core compared to a super wide 14mm shot. If you have a 35mm or 50mm lens with a fast aperture they are also excellent for Milky Way shots.
Nikon Z6 with NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens @ 24mm, f/2.8. Sky: 20 exposures at 10 seconds and IS0 6400 stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker for low noise. Foreground: 10 minutes at ISO 1600. The sky and foreground were then blended in Photoshop to get low noise and details in both the landscape and sky.
Maine Milky Way Workshops
There is only one spot left in my late season Milky Way photography workshop in Lubec, Maine, 2 hours east of Acadia National Park!
Oct 11-13 (3 nights, leave on 14th)
This is a landscape photography workshop, with a focus on landscape astrophotography with the Milky Way as conditions permit. This area is also a great place for dramatic sunrises and sunsets, with lobster boats, lighthouses, harbors, and rugged coastline as our foreground. There are also opportunities to photograph wildlife including bald eagles, seals, porpoise, and whales.
We will also drive over the bridge to Campobello Island, part of Canada, for a sunset trip -- so bring your passport!
